KUALA LUMPUR: A workers union warned tonight of a protracted dispute following the re-election of Rani Hisham Mohd Samsudin as CEO of Malayan Railway Berhad (KTMB).
The Railway Union of Malaya or RUM said Rani’s appointment was not “based on merit or performance”, which is required in an organization like KTMB.
“Do not blame the union if Rani’s appointment as CEO will lead to protracted disputes,” union president Abdul Razak Md Hassan said on Facebook.
KTMB today named Rani as its CEO, effective immediately. He replaces Kamarulzaman Zainal, whose services ceased yesterday, after just over a year at the helm.
This is a second season for Rani, 58, who previously served as CEO of KTMB from September 2017 to September 2019.
Razak said the union’s ties to Rani during the latter’s first term as CEO became strained after the two sides clashed over various issues.
He continued to regret that the Finance Ministry had given the green light to Rani’s appointment despite the union’s protest.
Razak alleged that Rani’s appointment was pressured by a group of people, who the union called a “mafia”, out of their own interest.
“It is sad that the Ministry of Finance has been misled by certain groups without thinking about the future of the workers or KTMB.
“The Ministry of Finance did not listen to our complaints,” he said.
It was previously reported that the union was against any plan to replace Kamarulzaman with Rani, and appealed to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to intervene in the matter.
