CITY OF GEORGE: Ramkarpal Singh (Photo) was the surprise “low” in the state party election, while his older brother, Jagdeep Singh Deo, only secured last place on the state committee.

Jagdeep, 49, only managed to secure 655 votes to win last place on the 15-seat state committee, a far cry from his last performance in 2018, where he got the second-highest number of votes, thus paving the way for him to be the vice president of state.

Ramkarpal, 44, who placed sixth in 2018, failed to make the top 15 this year.

The 15-member committee election at the 2021 Penang DAP convention here went smoothly, with the incumbent state president and chief minister Chow Kon Yeow garnering the highest number of votes with 1,211.

He was named president of the state, while Dr. P. Ramasamy was named vice president, and Zairil Khir Johari and Jagdeep held the two vice president positions.

DAP State Secretary Senator Lim Hui Ying and Treasurer Wong Hon Wai were also reappointed to their positions.

Lim came in fourth with 990 votes, while two of the former party guards, Phee Boon Poh and Lay Hock Peng, got the second and third highest number of votes, with 1,041 and 1,038, respectively.

Ramasamy, Zairil and RSN Rayer, who lost in 2018 and had to be co-opted in the last committee, made the list this time.

A total of 1,632 delegates attended the convention at the Setia SPICE Arena in Bayan Lepas on Sunday (March 21).

The Penang DAP voting process involves delegates voting for committee members, with the top 15 finalists appointed to their seats after an internal decision-making process.
