PETALING JAYA: A PKR lawmaker has challenged members of the cabinet under the Perikatan Nasional-led government to resign if they disagree with Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s speculated move to declare an emergency in the country.
Subang’s deputy Wong Chen said this in a Facebook post last night, asking them to “do the honorable thing and resign now.”
“If you continue to side with the prime minister, please know that if an emergency is declared, your inaction and stance will contribute to the erosion of the rule of law and fundamental rights in Malaysia,” he said.
He also appealed to all the deputies currently aligned with the PN government who “took a solemn oath to defend the Federal Constitution.”
“For those MPs who are not members of the Cabinet, they should review that oath now, rather than blindly supporting this emergency path.
“It is not too late to change his position, but he must do so publicly and promptly, or his inaction will paralyze Parliament, the august chamber that gives him its own political legitimacy,” Wong said.
He also reminded them of the legacy they will leave if they support the prime minister on this issue.
Stand on the right side of the story. Change your position now and together, a non-partisan majority of MPs can immediately end this manufactured emergency crisis. “
Wong said there was no justification for using the increase in Covid-19 cases to declare an Emergency when an enhanced lockdown was sufficient.
He also urged all his constituents to remain calm in the wake of all the speculation about the declaration of an emergency.
“Don’t panic, shop, stay home with your loved ones and pray for this nation,” he said.
“Have faith that whatever happens in the next few days, the Federal Constitution and democracy will prevail and those who seek to subvert the rakyat will be held accountable for their actions.”
Speculation about a possible partial declaration of the state of emergency arose when Muhyiddin sought an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in Kuantan yesterday.
Parliament’s end-of-year meeting will begin on November 2, and the 2021 budget will be presented on November 6. If the Dewan Rakyat does not approve the budget, the government will fall.
