TAWAU (Bernama): A man who committed two robberies with a parang length of 68 cm this morning was arrested as he was driving his hijacked motorcycle onto the grounds of the Tawau Police Station with a chasing crowd.

Tawau District Police Chief, ACP, Peter Umbuas, said the 27-year-old suspect was detained by police at 8.10am, 20 minutes after he robbed a man of his Modenas GT motorcycle in Jalan Tawau Lama here.

“The victim asked passersby for help in pursuing the suspect, but the suspect, who had hijacked his motorcycle, managed to evade them until he entered the grounds of the Tawau police station and was detained with his parang,” it said in a statement. on Friday (December 25).

ACP Peter said the suspect had also previously robbed a man driving a Nissan Frontier in Jalan Tanjung Batu Darat at 7 am.

“The suspect then escaped with the victim’s vehicle towards Jalan Tawau Lama, but the vehicle ran out of fuel at the Jalan Tawau Lama roundabout, forcing the suspect to abandon the vehicle on the side of the road,” he said.

ACP Peter said that a pretrial detention order will be issued against the suspect under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code at the Tawau Court of First Instance for further investigation.

The initial investigation revealed that he used the same modus operandi for both robberies, brandishing the parang to force the victims to stop and hijacking their vehicles to escape, ”he said.

It added that the suspect had previously been arrested four times since 2014 for drug abuse. – Bernama
