Special units will be established at public universities to help students stay off campus.

SHAH ALAM: The ministry of higher education will establish a special unit in all public universities to manage the affairs of students who are left off campus.

Higher Education Minister Noraini Ahmad said the unit or portfolio will be established by her ministry with the cooperation of universities and the Malaysian University Housing Council (MAPUM) to solve the problem of rented houses for students.

He said this was one of 11 proposals submitted by the National Student Advisory Council (MPPK) to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin in June.

“The government accepted the proposal and its implementation is being planned based on viability,” he said yesterday at the scholarship ceremony of the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

In addition, he said, the ministry had created a student homes portal to connect students with homeowners and help them find accommodation for them.

Noraini also said that the ministry was working to increase the functionality of the student registration card through the Kad Prihatin Siswa initiative.

“We intend to increase the functions of the student registration card as a multipurpose card that functions as a debit card and is equipped with facilities such as an electronic wallet for cashless transactions,” he said.
