“Public officials also pay taxes,” is the response of the president of the Congress of Trade Unions of Employees of Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs), Adnan Mat, to whom they affirm that the salaries of public officials at a time when the country is dealing with Covid-19 The pandemic comes from taxes paid by workers in other sectors.

In fact, Adnan said, the annual salary and bonus paid to public officials were much lower compared to those earned by private sector employees.

“During the movement control order (MCO) period, yes, we (officials) are paid, but there is no need to touch the tax system because we also pay taxes. Our income is much lower. Although the bonds paid in the private sector are much higher, we only receive RM500 annually.

“That is something we never discussed because we are serving the country,” said Adnan when he contacted us by phone during the Ruang Bicara television program entitled “Workers and the challenges of the new normal culture” in Bernama TV last night.

Adnan (down) also underlined that public officials whose spouses worked in the private sector or were self-employed also felt the impact of the MCO like everyone else.

He said that the family income of most public officials in the country was generally supported by a second income to cover the rising cost of living and the need to pay for home loans and so on.

“It is incorrect to say that public officials are not affected by the MCO. There are couples who work in the private sector, are self-employed, become seamstresses, etc., who have been affected by the MCO. With the high cost and 20 to 30 percent of your household income used to pay for home loans, officials are also affected, “he said.

Adnan said public officials still did their best, although they have had to work under a new normal due to the various changes the country is currently facing.

This, he said, was to ensure that people did not complain and still had access to government services, despite the MCO.

Referring to the theme of this year’s Labor Day celebration by Cuepacs, he said that it would be different compared to previous years, since there would be no meeting and it will be broadcast live through the congress Facebook page tomorrow At 9 am.

Thematic Pekerja Tunjang Kelestarian Negara (Workers, the pillars of national sustainability), the two prizes to be awarded to the recipients: the Anugerah Majikan Prihatin (Careful Employer Award) and Tokoh Hari Perkerja Cuepacs (Cuepacs Labor Day Personality): To be awarded to winners in accordance with existing MCO guidelines.

In addition to that, Cuepacs will also honor leaders for their efforts to help contain the spread of Covid-19 as part of their Labor Day program.
