While 1440p is a common resolution for gaming on PC, consoles generally stay in Full HD, or more recently jump straight to 4K. And for the PS5 at least, it looks like it will continue to do so for the next generation. A new report suggests that the PS5 will not support 1440p output.

The report came from IGN Italia, which states that the information came directly from Sony. Not having support for 1440p output would mean one of two things. Those using displays with that resolution will get their game up from Full HD or down from 4K.
On the one hand, it is not difficult to see why Sony made this decision, if it is true. In the previous generation of consoles, Full HD was the standard before the improved versions of the middle generation of consoles like the PS4 Pro appeared. And in those, the focus suddenly shifted to 4K, giving up 1440p entirely. The mid-term resolution is also not usually a resolution compatible with televisions.
But on the other hand, it means that those who use a single screen for their PC and game console cannot have the best experience for both simultaneously. And it’s a weird situation either way, as the PS5 is powerful enough to support 4K 120fps output anyway.
