The PS5 comes with an ultra-fast custom SSD, which also packs a rare 825GB capacity. That number drops further to between 660 and 670GB thanks to the console’s own operating system. And even if you do manage to get the console sooner, you’ll be stuck with that storage limit for a while.

If you remember the teardown of the PS5, the PS5 has a relatively accessible M.2 SSD expansion slot. But Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed to The Verge that the slot will be software locked in the early days of the console. A company representative says it is “reserved for a future upgrade.”
For one thing, it’s not exactly surprising. During the PS5 GDC presentation, Mark Cerny mentioned that not all M.2 SSDs are necessarily compatible with the console. This may be due to size or speed limitations, or even support for the console’s I / O controller. And so Cerny said “please wait to get that M.2 drive until you hear from us” while the company runs its compatibility tests and certifies those compatible.
But on the other hand, The Verge also reports that the compatibility testing program may not even have started yet. So even if you have the money to spare, you still shouldn’t get that fancy PCIe 4 SSD.
