KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd sold 14,989 vehicles in both the domestic and export markets last month, an increase of 26.2% from February, giving it an estimated market share of 23.5%.

The national automaker not only posted a new sales record for the year, but also achieved its best sales month since September 2013.

“For the first quarter of the year, the company achieved a total cumulative sales of 32,826 vehicles and its highest quarterly market share since March 2012,” it said today in a statement.

Proton said its two sport utility vehicle (SUV) models continued to grow in March as the company’s new production line in Tanjung Malim increased production during the month. A total of 3,513 units of the X50 were delivered, while the X70 saw a 58.4% monthly increase to 2,337 vehicles.

“When combined, it means that Proton has set another internal record with 5,850 SUVs delivered, beating the previous record of 4,820 units set last month,” he said.

However, Proton said the Saga was still its best seller with 5,589 vehicles delivered, and sales of the A-segment sedan grew 32.5% compared to February.

The Persona, Iriz and Exora models also posted the best figures of the year with evergreen multipurpose vehicles (MPVs) again topping the list of highest C-segment MPV sales with 2,151 Persona, 810 Iriz and 584 Exora vehicles during the year. month. .

Proton Edar Sdn Bhd CEO Roslan Abdullah said that after a smooth start to the year, Malaysia’s auto industry had finally taken a step forward.

“We estimate the total volume of the industry at more than 63,000 units, which suggests that all brands will publish their best figures for the year,” he said.
