PUTRAJAYA: Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun (pix) has clarified that the proposal to redefine the elderly in the country as those from 60 to 65 years was simply a proposal that she had not approved.

Therefore, he urged all sectors to stop causing confusion and politicize the issue and focus on efforts to further strengthen the well-being and life of the community, especially the family.

“I chaired the meeting, but I didn’t even agree (with the proposal). It was a proposal that we discussed because we saw an improvement in health and so on. It was just a discussion paper, not a decision or the policy of the ministry, ”he told reporters after launching the # JomChillOut @ KafeTEEN Program, here, today.

He said that by 2030, people aged 60 and over will constitute 15% of the country’s population, and therefore the ministry must make efforts to prepare for it.

The proposal to raise the age definition for the elderly was discussed during a meeting of the National Advisory and Advisory Council of Older Citizens (MPPWEN) on Thursday that sparked protests on social media.

On the # JomChillOut @ KafeTEEN program, Rina said that it was carried out to allow young people aged 13 to 24 to have access to the services provided by KafeTEEN in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

She said the three-day program offers counseling sessions, information on reproductive health and social issues, free use of the Internet and printers, as well as other activities.

The mobile KafeTEEN is an extension of the ministry’s KafeTEEN youth centers established in 2005 that seek to create skilled, happy and healthy youth, he added.

Rina said that the ministry plans to establish 10 mobile KafeTEENs next year with the goal of involving one million young people across the country. -Called
