KUALA LUMPUR: The current application against motorcycles with noisy exhausts focuses on defense action, which consists of issuing a notice for the interview, to assist in the investigation, rather than issuing a subpoena, said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong.

Wee said that he had reported the matter to the Director General of the Department of Road Transport (JPJ), Datuk Zailani Hashim, to have the notice against an offender issued for the interview process for a defense action instead of a summons action. .

“I have studied the speech of the president of Umno (Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on his views on action for noisy motorcycle exhausts.

“I would like to report that the Ministry of Transportation (MOT) has decided that at this stage, it is better to focus on the advocacy approach that is issuing Notice 114 rather than issuing subpoenas,” he told the media when he met after the opening of the General Assembly of the Umno 2020 here today.

Notice 114 is an interview notice for the purpose of conducting research and gathering information. Those who receive the notice should report to any JPJ branch to assist in the investigation.

Wee also said that a meeting was held between the police inspector general, Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador, JPJ director general to coordinate the promotional action, as the move also involved the traffic police.

The government had imposed a citation of up to RM2,000 or a prison term not exceeding six months on motorcycle owners who modified their vehicles with noisy exhausts.

Under section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987, the police are empowered to impound motorcycles to prevent the same offense from being repeated.

According to the Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT), as of March 5, a total of 10,166 citations were issued for various crimes in special operations carried out against motorcycles with noisy exhausts since March 1.

Ahmad Zahid raised the issue in his political speech at the Umno General Assembly this morning.

“Don’t take over the motorcycles. How do you want to keep surviving when that is the only vehicle you have to earn a living? We are blind and cruel to let people continue to suffer, ”he said. Named
