KUALA LUMPUR: The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam scheduled for February should proceed as planned, despite concerns about the growing number of Covid-19 cases, the National Union of Teaching Professions said.
The union president, Aminuddin Awang, said that NUTP did not want the excellent status of SPM to be affected because the certificate is also recognized in many countries and is equivalent to the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) in the UK.
“NUTP hopes that SPM will be able to proceed as planned for students who were supposed to sit for the exam in 2020 to ease their entry into the workforce or continue their tertiary education.
“These students, who will turn 18 this year, are mature enough and aware of the things that can affect their chances of continuing their studies or entering the workforce. They can adhere to the Covid-19 prevention measures, ”he said.
Aminuddin said the NUTP would also support any decision by the Education Ministry on calls to postpone reopening schools if Covid-19 cases continue to rise.
“On behalf of the teachers, we are ready to perform our duties and we hope that health and safety issues will be a priority in terms of the school reopening,” he said.
Yesterday, it was reported that Senior Education Minister Radzi Jidin said the ministry would have to wait for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s announcement on the next step related to the Covid-19 crisis.
