KOTA KINABALU: Universities and educators are urged to highlight and produce Nobel prizes.
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (Photo) said that universities should restructure or propose programs that reflect their strength with respect to a topic or theme.
“They should focus on what they are good at and put an emphasis on digging deeper into what they know best so that they can contribute off campus and become a source of guidance or reference,” he said at a scholarship ceremony at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. (UMS) here on Friday (September 11).
He advised educators to come up with ways to produce Nobel prizes to make the country proud. He said this will show that our education system is capable of competing in a global environment.
On improving the level of education in Sabah and the country as a whole, Muhyiddin said funds are needed for skills training and such.
“We need the collaboration of various stakeholders to obtain funds for education, training, etc., since the government has limited funds to work alone,” he said.
In this regard, he congratulated Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) for its corporate social responsibilities and for offering study scholarships for students from all over the country.
A total of 154 students in Sabah received the scholarship this year.
