TANGKAK: The Sengkang Batu 18 area near Bukit Gambir here can become a one-stop-shop agritourism center, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin told a group of farmers.
Farmers here welcomed Muhyiddin, who is Pagoh’s MP and Gambir assemblyman, to their farms and briefed him on projects in the area, said Tan Chee Kiong, a member of the Batu 18 and 19 Sengkang 1 project secretariat. Grisek Cluster Farming.
“This area is suitable to be developed as an agrotourism destination since we have a mushroom factory in Grisek, 202.34ha of padi and 242ha of leafy orchards.
“The famous Gunung Ledang has a spa and this area has the potential to develop as an agro-tourism destination center,” he said after the Prime Minister’s visit yesterday.
Tan noted that Muhyiddin advised farmers to create a comprehensive center where visitors could gain experience in agricultural work on farms.
“Visitors can harvest the vegetables and cook them. We are also studying the possibility of making souvenirs like T-shirts and hats as souvenirs for them, ”he said.
He said the group had 30 members who planted 16 different types of vegetables and fruits, including papayas, bananas, and guavas.
Tan added that farmers in the area were able to produce around 48,000 metric tons of leafy vegetables per year with a gross income of RM50,000, excluding fruits and palm oil.
Usually they ship most of the product to Melaka, parts of Johor, Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan, while the remaining 10% would be exported to Singapore.
“About 80% of our supplies go directly to hypermarkets, while the rest will be supplied to wholesale markets,” he added.
At another event, Muhyiddin said the government’s efforts to fix Felda were important in restoring the rights of its more than two million settlers.
He said that when Perikatan Nasional took over the administration of the nation, one of the goals was to repair and rehabilitate Felda.
“This is not a minor issue, so the government must take measures to save and restore rights to the settlers.
“If the land belongs to them, we will give it back to them. If the company is previously listed on the stock exchange, we will return it as a private company, ”he said in his speech during a meeting with local community leaders at Felda Sri Jaya here.
He added that the measures taken by the government were through the chairman of the Felda Special Task Force, Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, and the chairman of Felda, Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh.
In October, Felda issued RM9.9bil sukuk and recovered 351,000ha which it leased to FGV Holdings Bhd under its new recovery plan.
