JOHOR BAHRU: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pix) on Monday he expressed satisfaction that the people of Iskandar Malaysia continue to benefit from the development of the region and supported more rakyat-focused initiatives that can further raise their standard of living.

Muhyiddin, who is also co-chair of the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), said that Iskandar Malaysia, as an economic region, has shown excellent investment achievements from its inception to today.

“However, I am most excited to see the many achievements of the region in ensuring that the Rakyat are not left behind and building a cohesive and resilient community amid their accelerating development,” said the Prime Minister after the meeting of Members of the IRDA Authority (MoA). via video conference on Monday.

The statement on the meeting was published by IRDA here today.

According to IRDA, Iskandar Malaysia recorded a huge total cumulative investment of RM 322.1 billion from 2006 to June 2020, during which more than 750,000 jobs were created.

Meanwhile, IRDA Executive Director Datuk Ismail Ibrahim said that the Wealth Inclusion and Participation Agenda in the Comprehensive Development Plan (CDPii) aimed to achieve equitable wealth for the community living in Iskandar Malaysia. “An important aspect of ensuring that this agenda is sustainable is ensuring that the ecosystem promotes social connection to help society participate in the decision-making process and the implementation of locally-based initiatives,” said Ismail.

A key proposal that emerged during the MoA meeting is to organize a data collection effort through civil society organizations (CSOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) using technology.

Muhyiddin said that by using data captured by CSOs and NGOs and leveraging technology to analyze this data, it would help authorities and other partners in Iskandar Malaysia to come up with more effective and evidence-based solutions and initiatives for people’s well-being. Another proposed initiative is to improve the competencies and skills of leaders of community institutions.

“The recommendation is that committees and designated community representatives and leaders go through a structured capacity-building exercise to improve their effectiveness in the performance of their duties to help the government empower people to instill a sense of ownership.

“Community leaders and representatives who can communicate better with confidence can better engage their community,” Muhyiddin said. A third proposal is to support the government initiatives of the current Prihatin Rakyat Economic Stimulus Package (PRIHATIN) and the National Economic Recovery Plan (PENJANA) by incorporating financial literacy learning modules into all existing empowerment programs.

While the two government initiatives would provide immediate financial support and relief to the people, good financial planning skills would further help them organize and distribute their financial resources, he added. “I am confident that other members of IRDA’s Board of Authority (MoA) will agree with me on the rakyat-focused agenda in Iskandar Malaysia and support all proposed initiatives to help the rakyat further, especially during and after of the Covid-19 pandemic “.
