HIGH CITY, January 4: The Johor Fire and Rescue Department is ready to face the high tide phenomenon which will occur around 2.30am tomorrow and is expected to cause a flood of up to 2.4 meters, especially in the city of Kota Tinggi.
Johor Fire and Rescue Department Deputy Director Pauzan Ahmad said currently flooding in the district is increasing as a result of high tides and standing water.
“The high tide delays the flow of flood water into the sea and the water levels have risen by 0.3 meters. We are concerned that the situation will result in increased flood levels, as well as new areas, “he said when meeting today at the Bandar Kota Tinggi Bridge.
Regarding his preparations, he said that 165 people and eight officers have been assigned to Kota Tinggi and are equipped with six boats and six ATVs, as well as two trucks, all of which have been parked in the flood-affected areas.
“The department’s force in Kota Tinggi is currently adequate to conduct rescue operations without the need for additional manpower from other districts,” he said.
He said the department is also ready with an ‘Advanced Regional Base’ for the southern zone that is ready to help in terms of manpower and logistics if the flooding in the area worsens.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Public Works, Infrastructure and Transportation Committee, Mohd Solihan Badri, said his committee has asked the Johor Public Works Department (JKR) to have the district’s JKR engineers identify the best methods to prevent floods in the future.
“We cannot have floods every year, we cannot keep closing roads and evacuating people, this area must have a plan to solve the problem of flooding in the long term,” he said.
He also suggested that JKR, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) and the Kota Tinggi district office should come together to manage development in the area.
He said talks will be held with several of the agencies involved to identify the reasons behind the flooding and ways to improve the highway and drainage systems.
“JKR and JPS must provide feedback whenever there is new development by private developers to avoid flooding in the future,” he said.- Bernama
