Adams broke the deadlock 11 minutes before halftime after Sheffield United couldn’t cope with James Ward-Prowse’s delivery of kicks, and from that point on the victory never seemed to be in doubt.
Stuart Armstrong put the game beyond the reach of the visitors just after the hour with a shot that deflected from veteran Phil Jagielka and left Aaron Ramsdale out of chance.
Nathan Redmond put the shine on another good display, scoring just three minutes after coming off the bench, playing a lovely give-and-take with Oriol Romeu and tucked him into the far corner.
The Blades, who brought in record signing Rhian Brewster off the bench, again proved toothless in attack and never seemed to add to their dismal five-goal tally this season.
The victory lifts Southampton to third place, one point behind leader Tottenham who have played one more match. Sheffield United, meanwhile, remains last and without a win in 12 games.
TALKING POINT: More unwanted records for Blades, as the Saints advance
The pressure is mounting on Wilder, with his team breaking records for all the wrong reasons. They are only the fourth team in the history of the English Football League to have not more than one point in their first 12 league games of a season. The last team to fail to win any of their first 12 Premier League games since the start of a campaign was Queens Park Rangers in 2012-13.
It took Rs 16 games to finally clinch a win, and at this stage it’s hard to see where the Blades will end their sterile streak. Lack of goals is the obvious problem, and Wilder must figure out how to get his forwards to shoot. Billy Sharp was left isolated, with £ 23 million signing Brewster left kicking his heels on the bench. Wilder’s players have a lot of heart, but the coach needs to find a better balance on the team. They are a shadow of the team that was so confident and seemed so comfortable at this level last season.
As for Southampton, his dream start to the season continues. His energy and high pressure system has been a breath of fresh air and his fans have every right to dream. After losing 5-2 at Tottenham, Hasenhuttl’s team have won seven of 10 games.
MAN OF THE MATCH – Che Adams (Southampton)
How the Blades wish they had a player who could lead the front like their former player Adams. He got onto the roster, but there was so much more to his game as he defended from the front and tied the game together. Adams has now scored four goals in 12 league games this season, as many as he scored in 30 Premier League appearances throughout the 2019-20 season.
