Premier League: Frank Lampard’s Chelsea secures a comfortable win at Newcastle United

A goal in each half led Chelsea to a comfortable 2-0 win over Newcastle to climb to the top of the Premier League table.

Chelsea shot out of the traps and deservedly took the lead when Federico Fernandez hit the ball through his own net from a Blues corner in the 10th minute on the clock.

Frank Lampard’s team was a bit careless and allowed the home team to return to the game, but ended Newcastle’s response with a devastating goal against Timo Werner, finished off by Tammy Abraham, on the minute of the third game in a row.

The hosts ended the encounter with a shot on goal throughout the match, as Chelsea went undefeated to 12 in all competitions to, temporarily at least with their rivals in action later in the weekend, climb to the top of the league. Premier League for the first time under Lampard.

Newcastle had no response to the Blues attack from the start, and moments after one of those heat-seeking missile crossings from Hakim Ziyech forced a good save from Karl Darlow, Mason Mount drilled through the middle after a short corner, and Fernández, challenged by Ben Chilwell, could do nothing as he directed the ball into his own net.

Werner, who was looking to quickly forget Germany’s 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Spain in the middle of the week, should have made two just after half an hour, but somehow slipped the ball with the goal at his mercy.

Opportunities continued to come and go for Chelsea, with Newcastle creating a few opportunities of their own, but the squandering of the hosts was punished in style by Chelsea, with Werner setting up afterburners to open Newcastle before setting Abraham up for that second killer.

Not all is going well in Newcastle, with fans unhappy with what they see from afar. Chelsea, on the other hand, is trying their best and sending a real message to their rivals.

Even with all the summer outlay, it was thought that a new image would need time to consolidate, with Liverpool and Manchester City in a league of their own for now.

However, with the season looking a bit more unpredictable in these uncertain times, Chelsea have taken the opportunity to sit at the top of the pile and they deserve to be there.

What scares Chelsea’s rivals is that there is more to come. Christian Pulisic has struggled to stay in shape, Kai Havertz has yet to recover, while the Blues’ strength in depth from the bench is terrifying.

Werner took a few weeks to settle down, but he seems more than comfortable in the Premier League. He really should have scored at St James. ‘ but his integral contribution was of real quality and constant threat.
