KUALA LUMPUR: Prasarana Malaysia Bhd confirmed tonight that its CEO, Nizam Alias, had been suspended since December 9 for alleged misconduct and insubordination.

The company’s president, Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, said that a special committee made up of the board of directors was established to investigate Nizam.

Tajuddin said a letter of showing cause was sent to Nizam on November 27 and that the latter has since responded. “They also told him to go on leave on charges of misconduct and insubordination,” Tajuddin told a news conference.

Tajuddin said the suspensions were “normal” in such cases.

He said he had initially decided to refrain from commenting after speculation about Nizam’s status emerged, but has now been forced to explain the matter since reports of the suspension emerged.

The government-owned Prasarana owns and operates the Rapid LRT lines in Kuala Lumpur and the bus lines in Selangor, Penang, Perak and Pahang.

The company has been featured in news reports about a dispute with MRCB-George Kent, the prime contractor for the LRT3 project.

Tajuddin continued to express his disappointment at Nizam’s attack in the media. “It is unprofessional to highlight internal affairs to the public.”

News portal The Vibe reported on Nizam’s suspension on December 8. He said the suspension was linked to Nizam’s “irritable relationship” at the leadership level since Tajuddin was appointed president.

Tajuddin is a member of the Supreme Council of Umno and the party’s director of elections. He is also a deputy for Pasir Salak. He was appointed president of Prasarana in May.
