PUTRAJAYA: BASE jumping training in conjunction with Federal Territories Day 2021 scheduled for today was canceled following a fatal incident involving one of the jumpers in the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development building says one of the victim’s friends.

The friend said yesterday’s training and another session scheduled for today were canceled out of respect for the victim.

Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) corporate communications division director Tengku Aina Tengku Ismail Shah said that the BASE jump training session held here on Friday had received permission from the building manager in question, PPj, as the organizer and authority local. The Malaysian Rescue and Assistance Team (Smart) was informed about the session and its personnel were also on standby at the scene.

“The training had also taken into account all aspects of safety and the weather. The wind direction indicators were placed on the building and the landing area.

“Based on the direction and strength of the wind during the incident, it was safe to make the jump,” Tengku Aina said in a statement yesterday.

She was commenting on an incident in which a man died during a BASE jump test at the ministry building on Friday.

In the 5.35pm incident, Azuan Taharudin, 49, along with seven other BASE jumpers from the BASE ABABIL Club were training for a performance in conjunction with Federal Territories Day 2021.

During the jump, Azuan is said to have lost control of his parachute and hit the building’s windows several times before falling.

“Azuan, who had more than 18 years of skydiving experience, had performed 300 BASE jumps.

“He also participated in many jumping events held in Putrajaya, such as Terjunan Kibaran Jalur Gemilang ke-62, Terjunan Jubli Perak 25 Tahun Putrajaya, Putrajaya International Hot Air Balloon and Putrajaya BASE Jump 2020,” he said.

Tengku Aina said that PPj also expressed his deepest condolences to Azuan’s family.

The ministry in a statement said that PPj had taken the necessary safety measures based on established procedures for the test jump, including having an emergency rescue team on standby at the scene.

“The Putrajaya Corporation had submitted an application to the ministry and the permit was granted based on the conditions agreed by both parties,” he said.

The ministry said that BASE jumping events were held in the building every year, and that the Putrajaya BASE Jump event, which was held for the first time last year, had succeeded in attracting the participation of professional BASE jumpers, including those from abroad. – Bernama
