PETALING JAYA: Former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad says PPBM leaders had lobbied for the party’s departure from Pakatan Harapan (PH) due to its DAP component.
Mahathir, who was PPBM president when the party left PH, said this in explaining why he had resigned as prime minister, triggering a political crisis that ended with the appointment of PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister and the formation of the Perikatan government Nasional.
In a video released today, he said that the PPBM leaders had pushed for the departure of the PH party, a measure that, according to him, was without foundation, since the coalition had given him all their support to decide when he would leave office.
Mahathir was nominated as PH Prime Minister in a deal leading up to the 14th General Election in May 2018.
As part of the deal, he was supposed to hand over power to PKR President Anwar Ibrahim on an unspecified date.
“When the decision was made (at the last PH presidential council meeting) and I got all of PH’s support, I said to Muhyiddin, why should we leave PH when I have all the support?
“If there are other reasons, wait, we will stop smoking. But he was of the opinion that we had to leave the PH today, otherwise DAP would crush the Malays. “
But Mahathir said he did not believe that DAP could so easily crush the Malays. He said he had asked PPBM leaders to wait and think carefully about the repercussions of leaving PH since he had won the general election.
“And we were with them. With their support, we won the victory, ”he said, adding that PPBM could not suddenly reject the PH and work with Umno and PAS, which he said were lost and marred by corruption.
However, he said that PPBM leaders had ignored his views and abandoned PH.
“I thought about this: if my party rejected me, I had to resign. That is why I resigned as president of PH and later as PM, ”he said.
