KUALA LUMPUR: An off-duty police inspector who was present during a fight in Bangsar that left a man dead on Saturday was summoned for an investigation following allegations of inaction from him while witnessing the commotion.

The 27-year-old police officer was captured on video taken by his friend while about 10 youths, including the murdered victim and his friend, were involved in a violent confrontation in a back alley near Jalan Telawi 3.

In the pictures, the policeman’s friend calls the inspector, who smiled and responded by saying, “Hey, I don’t know what’s going on too, lah.”

He said that the officer had claimed that he had earlier left his home in Subang Jaya with his friend and had gone to Bangsar for dinner.

Anuar said the inspector and his friend were walking to his car when they ran into the fight.

He said the video was taken by a friend of the inspector, a 27-year-old commercial film editor.

“The inspector did not carry a firearm because he was out of service. He was about to call the police, but saw that police patrols were arriving at the scene. Then he left the place home shortly after, ”Anuar said.

Under the provisions of the Police Act, all police personnel, regardless of rank, are expected to use their authority to prevent a crime that they may witness even when not on duty.
