The Immigration Department raided the Menara City One building in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.

KUALA LUMPUR: Federal police launched an investigation into a report by the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post newspaper on the Immigration Department’s foray into foreigners on Friday.

CID federal director Huzir Mohamed said the investigation was under police control, despite the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission having said no action would be taken on the report.

Communications Minister Saifuddin Abdullah also said he had ordered MCMC not to take action against SCMP reporter Tashny Sukumaran.

Huzir said this afternoon: “We have opened an investigative document. It is within our reach. MCMC is not part of that. “

Tashny had said today that she had been summoned to be in Bukit Aman on Wednesday for questioning about the report.

She said that she had been informed that the investigation was under the provision of the Penal Code against “anyone who intentionally insulted to provoke provocation and disturb the public peace” and also under the communications law for improper use of network facilities.

The article published on Friday had a headline that read “Hundreds Arrested as Malaysia Crackdown on Immigrants in Covid-19 Red Zones.”
