The case started on October 16, when the woman uploaded two photos of her newborn baby to the online marketplace, saying that a 36-week-old baby is available for adoption for the price of 200,000 won (RM725).
The shocking post immediately went viral in local online communities, prompting police to launch an investigation for its possible violation of the Child Welfare Act.
According to police, the woman gave birth at a clinic in Jeju city last Tuesday before uploading her post online at a postnatal care center in the same city three days later.
“She said she got angry after learning that the adoption process is difficult and time consuming. But we also approached the case with her emotional and financial difficulties in mind, ”said a police officer, noting that she does not have a job and the father is not in a position to raise a baby.
His parents also live in Jeju, but are not in a position to extend a helping hand, the official said.
Police said they will question the woman further after she leaves the prenatal care center. She is reportedly planning to enter a facility for single mothers after being discharged from the center.
