KUALA LUMPUR: Police have opened four investigative documents related to a recent Rohingya-related problem in Malaysia, including an offensive and intimidating video from Facebook Live believed to have been produced by a group of Rohingya men.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Huzir Mohamed said police checks found the video was recorded using the Facebook account of a “Villan Vicky,” a Rohingya residing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States.
“I used to live in Malaysia. The publication (contains images that) challenges Malaysians to use abusive language, ”he said in a statement here today.
He said the investigations were also carried out in a viral video post that showed four people training with firearms, and that the suspects had threatened to shoot anyone who invaded their place of residence.
The investigation into the case involving the Rohingya ethnic group was carried out by the Department of Classified Criminal Investigation (CCID) (Prosecutor’s Office and Legal Division) D5 after receiving 19 reports on the matter from Saturday (April 25) until yesterday. .
Huzir said investigations into the Facebook Live video found that it was a conversation between a group of three people and another man, questioning the purpose of the group’s negative comments against the Malays.
“At the end of the Facebook Live video, the group explained that their anger was not directed at the Malays in Malaysia, but rather against Zafar Ahmad, president of the Rohingya Ethnic Human Rights Organization of Myanmar Malaysia (Merhrom),” he said.
“The Facebook Live video has caused misunderstandings between the two sides, leading to threats, insults and abusive comments,” he said.
Meanwhile, Huzir urged the public to stop speculating on the matter, as any statement or article related to the matter, shared or posted on social media, could cause tension and disorder in the country.
