KANGAR: Police are tracking the main suspect and eight others involved in the shooting with two members of the General Operations Force (GOF) staff in the border area between Malaysia and Thailand yesterday.

Perlis Police Chief Surina Saad said the main suspect, a local in his 50s, and the other eight suspects from two groups of smugglers are still believed to be on the country’s border.

“Today, at 9 am, we arrested a Thai suspect who fell into a ravine during the shooting,” he told a news conference today.

Bernama reported yesterday that during the 3.10 am incident, Police Corporal Baharuddin Ramli, 54, of the elite Senoi Praaq unit, was killed and Corporal Norihan Tari, 39, was seriously injured in a shootout with smugglers at about 600 meters from the TS9 command post in Padang Besar, Perlis.

Surina said police would do everything possible to ensure that all suspects in the shooting incident are caught as soon as possible.

He said they were also working to extradite the four suspects arrested by their counterparts in Thailand and that it would require the approval of the Thai police chief.

“The talks with the Thai police are continuing and all the suspects will be brought to Malaysia soon,” he said, adding that the police had identified the firearm used by the suspect as a shotgun based on the bullets found during Baharuddin’s autopsy.

Surina said Norihan would be transferred to Penang General Hospital today for surgery and three bullets removed.

“One bullet is near the lungs and two more in the abdomen area near the spine,” he said, adding that Baharuddin’s death would not weaken police morale, but would inspire them to redouble efforts to ensure and protect the country.
