George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said action was taken against the 99 men and 48 women who failed to observe physical distancing and for organizing prohibited activities.

“The Northeast District Police, the Division of Secret Societies, Vice and Gambling (D7), the Penang Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) and the Penang Island City Council have carried out a joint operation to monitor and verify compliance with the recovery MCO’s SOP.

“We carried out the joint operation from Tuesday (September 15) to Friday (September 18) at seven outlets that were located in Lebuh Pantai, Lebuh Gereja, Lebuh Nordin, Jalan Penang, Jalan Pintal Tali and Persiaran Gurney “, said.

ACP Soffian said two point-of-sale keepers were separately arrested for conducting entertainment activities without a license and for having the entertainment license expired.

“We also discovered that an entertainment license has expired and has confiscated musical instruments that were used for entertainment purposes.

“The Penang JSJN has performed a random preliminary urine screening test on 37 people and the results were all negative,” he said.

He said MBPP had also issued a seven-day closure of business notice at five facilities that did not meet SOPs.

“A premise was ordered to stop entertainment activities immediately and aggravated to run a restaurant business without a valid license from MBPP,” he said in a statement on Saturday (September 19), “it said.

ACP Soffian added that all cases will be investigated under Section 6 (1) (a) of the Entertainment Act of 1998 for expired entertainment licenses and Section 6 (2) of the same law to operate entertainment activities without a license. .

“The enclosures were issued under Regulation 3 of the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Regulation (Measures within Infected Local Areas) 2020 for organizing prohibited activities in nightclubs and for not observing physical distancing.

“We urge all merchants and customers to adhere to all business guidelines, including obtaining a valid business license and adhering to standard operating procedures established by the government,” he said.

He also warned the owners of entertainment centers and nightclubs not to carry out their operations, since they fall into the category of activities that are not yet allowed.

“Stringent action will be taken against a business owner, including issuing a notice of closure or seizure or revocation of the license, if it is determined that they have violated the rules and SOPs.

“Clients who do not adhere to SOPs will be aggravated.

“We urge the public to continue to channel information if they find any activity that is illegal or has violated SOPs,” he said.
