GEORGE TOWN: The police arrested a drug union, which had been active in the northern part of the country, with the arrest of its members and the seizure of drugs worth about RM2,164 thousand.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) director Comm Datuk Razarudin Husain said 12 suspects were caught in eight separate raids at various locations in Kedah and Penang on Friday (November 13).
He added that the suspects arrested included a Lao woman and three Bangladeshi men.
“The suspects, aged 22 to 58, were arrested during an operation that was carried out by Bukit Aman NCID in collaboration with Penang NCID,” he told a news conference at the headquarters of the state police contingent on Sunday (15 of November).
Comm Razarudin said police found 872 pieces of dried leaves believed to be marijuana weighing around 865.7 kg during raids at various locations in Penang and Kedah.
He added that the police also seized cash for RM752 and six vehicles worth RM210,000, saying the union was run by a 56-year-old man and has been active since the beginning of this year.
“The drugs were believed to have come from a neighboring country and were intended to be distributed in the northern and southern regions of Peninsular Malaysia,” Comm Razarudin said.
He said the suspects have been in pretrial detention for seven days since November 13 and three of them have prior criminal and drug offenses.
It added that four of the suspects tested positive for marijuana, methamphetamine and Erimin 5.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1952, which carries the death penalty upon conviction.
