SERDANG: Police are investigating an incident in which an elderly man was threatened and firecrackers were thrown at him on the eve of Deepavali.

Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Razali Abu Samah said that police were dispatched to a housing area there to verify complaints of riots around 11.15pm on Friday (November 13).

“An elderly man filed a report after a man threw fireworks at him and hit him in the eye.

“When he tried to talk to the man, another man who was believed to be drunk approached him and threatened to cut him off and break his head,” he told reporters at the Serdang police headquarters on Monday (November 16) .

He said police went to the scene and saw a group of men lighting fireworks there.

“They told the group to stop their activities, using a megaphone, but the men ignored them. The personnel were also surrounded by a large group of men and could not leave the area for about 30 minutes, “he said.

ACP Razali added that a video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

He said the police were also aware that certain parties had questioned why the police at the scene were only watching and not taking action.

“Our men had to consider any retaliation if they had taken action during that time, so they decided to defuse the situation.

“On Sunday night we carried out an operation and detained eight suspects believed to be involved in the incident, aged between 27 and 63,” he said.

ACP Razali said police are also looking for two men, Saravanan Suppaiah, 38, and Vinoth Rave, 27, to assist in their investigation.

“We are investigating this case for obstructing the officials in the performance of their duties and being in possession of explosives,” he added.
