Police face action for alleged rape of adolescent detained in Miri

PETALING JAYA: Eleven police officers are likely to be fired or demoted for the rape of a 16-year-old detainee allegedly by another detainee in a police cell in Miri.

Bukit Aman’s Department of Integrity and Compliance Standards (JIPS) director Comm Datuk Zamri Yahya said the department has investigated the case and staff misconduct in the incident.

“Aside from the criminal action taken against two police officers, actions (demotion or dismissal) will be taken against 11 other senior and junior officers who were found to have failed and were careless in the performance of their duties,” he said in a statement. Monday (February 15).

On February 9, two policemen pleaded not guilty when they were charged under the 2001 Juvenile Law in connection with the rape of the minor in a police cell in Miri on January 9.

Another man also sought trial after being accused of raping the girl at the same location.

On February 8, Sarawak Police Commissioner Comm Datuk Aidi Ismail said that the two police officers who were on duty during the incident had been suspended pending an investigation into the matter.

He also said that the CCTV system in the lock could only display real-time images, but could not record anything, adding that the crime had occurred in the bathroom where there was no CCTV.

The girl, suspected of being involved in illegal gambling activity at a seafood restaurant where she worked, was also reported to have been placed in a separate cell of 12 male detainees, but she alleged that the men’s cell was open.

He also claimed that a detainee managed to obtain the key to the women’s cell between 4 am and 5 am and took it to the bathroom where the crime was allegedly committed.
