KUALA LUMPUR: The police have established a unique center known as the CCID Scam Response Center to combat Macau scams.

Bukit Aman’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Zainuddin Yaacob said that through the center, which had been in operation since February 15, the public could investigate and carry out crime-related controls.

He said the center also served as the first recipient of information (phone number and bank account information provided by the Macao Scam syndicate) from victims of fraud or from those with information related to Macao Scam activities.

“The public can also get confirmation as to whether the calls received are really from a government office, Macau scammers, or others.

“In 2019, a total of 5,725 scam cases were reported in Macau involving losses of more than RM254 million, while last year, a total of 6,003 cases were recorded with a total loss amounting to more than RM287 million.” he said today in a statement.

Zainuddin said that from January to March 24 this year, a total of 1,392 cases were reported, with losses amounting to more than RM38 million.

He said the number registered showed a significant increase and was clearly a situation that needed to be addressed immediately.

“We urge the public to take advantage of this facility to help stop these types of scams.

“The Macau scam is a common criminal modus operandi in which criminals use the Voice Over Internet Protocol application to conceal their identities when communicating with victims,” he said.

Among the tactics used to deceive victims are disguising themselves as authorities or officials of institutions and financial services, as well as family, friends or dignitaries.

Zainuddin said the center could be reached at 03-26101559 and 03-26101599 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. – Named
