SEREMBAN: Today’s Forensic Court was informed that an email account used to send an alleged ransom demand to Nora Anne Quoirin’s family on August 7, 2019, had been deactivated.
DSP Hazizi Abd Samad, 42, of the Cybercrime Investigation Division of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department, Bukit Aman, said the account status was obtained when a verification was conducted on September 14, shortly after email address to be obtained on September 11th.
“In this investigation (of the email account) there are two main parts, the first is the content and the second is the header. Since my job is to analyze this email, we look at the header because it contains information about how an email is sent, as well as browser information and the Internet Protocol (IP) address.
“On September 14, I checked the email”[email protected]’, via the email verifier website and showed that the email account had been deactivated. “

Hazizi said that based on his 14 years of experience in the cybercrime division, the action showed an element of fraud and was targeted by scammers. The investigation did not find the actual IP address of the sender.
He said that since the email was registered with Microsoft Corporation, only Microsoft knew the actual address of the email and when it was created.
“In the investigation, the IP address was registered with the Hotmail webmail service,” he said.
When asked by Deputy Prosecutor Nuralis Mat what conclusions could be drawn about the email, Hazizi said: “In my opinion, only Microsoft knows the IP address of the email.”
Responding to a question from attorney S Sakthyvell, who represented Nora Anne’s family, whether the police could get the information from Microsoft, Hazizi said it could be done through the mutual legal assistance scheme with the US.
Sakthyvell: Does that mean that only Microsoft knows the details of who owns this email?
They do not: Microsoft maintains all logs from the beginning of the email account creation, delivery transactions, and when it is deactivated. As for the owner, in my opinion, as it is a free webmail service, anyone can register with any identity.
When asked by Sakthyvell if an email could be created in this country, but using a UK or US IP address, Hazizi said it could be done.
Earlier, two witnesses, 39-year-old member of the public M Magendran and cryptocurrency investigating officer Bukit Aman, 36-year-old Inspector Nur Adli Md Saari, were called to testify.
Nur Adli informed the court that the e-wallet number listed in the email allegedly demanding a ransom for two Bitcoins, was detected as that of a scammer.
He said that the police had deposited RM100 on August 13 last year, and a check in the electronic wallet found it to be active on August 12 and 13 and that the suspect transferred said deposit to various other accounts to avoid detection.
“The e-wallet used is in line with known tactics used by scammers,” he said.
Nora Anne disappeared on August 4 last year, a day after she and her parents arrived in Malaysia for a two-week vacation at a resort in Pantai, here.
His body was found on August 13 near a stream in a mountainous area, about 2.5 km from the rainforest complex, after a massive search.
The post-mortem report indicated that there was no criminal element in Nora Anne’s death and it was established that she died due to gastrointestinal bleeding from hunger and stress over a prolonged period.
The investigation continues tomorrow.
