KOTA KINABALU: Police have recaptured 11 of the 14 detained immigrants who escaped from the temporary detention center in Tawau early Friday (October 9).
“So far we have recaptured 11 of them, three more are still at large,” Tawau District Police Chief Asst Comm Peter Umbuas said when contacted at 1.30pm on Saturday (October 10).
He added that an operation was underway to locate three other fugitives who reportedly climbed through the main gate of the temporary immigrant detention camp around 2 a.m. Friday.
The 14 detainees who escaped were quarantined while they awaited Covid-19 test results pending deportation, he said.
According to initial reports, a worker saw some of the 14 detainees climb a perimeter fence of the detention center and flee the area.
When the controls were carried out, the camp authorities found that 14 detainees from Block 1 were missing.
ACP Peter urged anyone with information on the fugitives to contact the police.
Tawau District is currently under an Enhanced Movement Control Order (MCO).
