GEORGE TOWN: Police have called off a search for an alleged small plane that crashed into the sea off Tanjung Bungah after arriving empty-handed since Sunday.

Northeast District Police Chief Soffian Santong said the search would resume only if there are new leads to support the claim of several people who were on the beach at 2 p.m. yesterday. No debris or clues had been found as of dusk yesterday.

Two fishermen and a security guard said that a dark-colored airplane-like object had sunk into the sea 1.5 to 5 km from shore, Soffian said.

The police had questioned a boy from the beach, but he said he did not see any plane accidents, while the Marine Police in the area said that the fishermen and fishermen there at that time also did not see anything.

He said the police would carry out further investigations as the report could not, so far, be dismissed as false.

As of 11 a.m. today, the police had not received any reports from the Malaysian Civil Aviation Authority or any airline about the disappearance of a pilot or plane.

The CAAM said tonight that there were no missed flights in its records nor had any emergency signals been received.
