PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to chair a special meeting on Covid-19 tomorrow, a federal minister revealed today hours after the highest daily number of infections was reported since the pandemic began.

Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa said on Twitter: “Tomorrow, YAB PM will chair a special Covid-19 meeting.” She expected “immediate and severe measures” to be taken.

Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in response to Annuar’s tweet said that he hoped the new SOPs would help contain the virus. “We must not sit down,” he said.

A source from the administration confirmed with FMT that a special Covid-19 meeting would take place and that it would be held in the morning.

Earlier, the chief health officer, Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, said the ministry had urged that all large-scale events and mass gatherings be postponed following the surge in cases.

He said there had been no discussion of a possible closure in Selangor. However, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has also urged Selangor residents to stay indoors and not go out into unnecessarily crowded public places.

An opposition MP and 64 Klang parent-teacher groups have also called for the district’s schools to be closed.

Noor Hisham said mass gatherings should be avoided to break the chain of infection. “If mass meetings or conferences are necessary, each organizer must ensure that all parties comply with established standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“We are still in the recovery motion control order (RMCO) period and everyone must comply with the SOP set by the National Security Council,” he said today at a press conference here.

Noor Hisham said that until now there was no recommendation from the ministry to limit activities in the social sector, although daily cases of Covid-19 showed an increase.

The Health Ministry has said that 287 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded today, all of which were local infections. There were 31 new cases in Selangor, including two new groups, and 129 cases in Kedah from the newly identified Tembok group.

Today’s cases bring the total number of infections in Malaysia to 11,771.
