KOTA KINABALU: The federal government fully supports Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) to lead the state government and will prioritize its development needs, says Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said that this support and the relationships between the state and federal governments have allowed the Sabah government to function in the best possible way.

“We will prioritize development needs and assistance to Sabah, so that its people receive the attention they deserve,” he said.

Muhyiddin said that for the past few months, as the nation struggled to cope with the pandemic and economic downturn, the Federal Government had allocated and funded Sabah to fight Covid-19.

Looking ahead, Muhyiddin said that with Sabah’s strong, united and capable GRS government, he is confident that Sabah will not only recover, but emerge stronger economically and socially.

“Even more so with Sabah Maju Jaya’s economic plan that focuses on three main axes – economy, human capital and people’s well-being, infrastructure and environment – there will soon be positive changes,” he said during a dinner with GRS leaders here Sabah on Sunday (March 21).

This is his first official visit to Sabah since GRS won the state elections in September last year.

During his speech, he reminded GRS leaders to remember how they got to where they are and how they managed to topple the previous Warisan government.

“We must remember why the rakyat voted for us, our work is not done to help them,” Muhyiddin said.

Earlier, Sabah’s Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor assured Sabahans that the state government will continue to fight for the rights stipulated in the 1963 Malaysia Agreement (MA63).

“Petronas has paid Sabah the 5% sales tax, while a special task force has been created to investigate what is owed to us in MA63,” he said.

He said that these rights are expressed not only out of concern for Sabah, but also as a form of love and loyalty to the Federation of Malaysia that was formed together with Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.
