In a special announcement today (December 22), Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin volunteers to be one of the first people to be injected with the Covid-19 vaccine.

Astro Awani reported that the prime minister said that this will be a method to convince Malaysians that the vaccine is safe and effective.

“This will be followed by front-line personnel, before being handed over to the target groups, that is, high-risk groups such as the elderly, people with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and chronic respiratory diseases.”

An agreement has been signed with the pharmaceutical AstraZeneca to obtain 6.4 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. It is the third agreement after the government signed an agreement with COVAX for the purchase of 10 percent of the vaccine and the company Pfizer for 20 percent of the same purchase, at the end of last month.

The government will spend 504.4 million US dollars (2.05 billion ringgit), 80% more than its initial goal, which is to provide vaccines to 70% of Malaysians.
