KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has called on world leaders to expand their efforts to flatten the terrorism curve in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and restore peace and stability to the world.
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that while the world worked to flatten the Covid-19 curve, recent terrorist attacks in Europe demonstrated that the curve of terrorism and violent extremism had not flattened.
“On disarmament and the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, we must not lose sight of the imperative of the general and complete elimination of nuclear weapons, including in the wake of Covid-19,” he said during his speech at the XI ASEAN-United Nations . Summit.
“Let me express my government’s appreciation to all parties who joined in the statement of support for the UN Secretary General’s call for a global ceasefire amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We hope that this initiative will contribute to ending hostilities and achieving sustained peace around the world,” he said.
The 11th Asean-UN Summit was held on the last day of the 37th Asean Summit. The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, also joined virtually.
Muhyiddin further noted that Malaysia’s recent ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons demonstrated the country’s unequivocal support for this agenda.
He said Malaysia remained committed to addressing the threat of terrorism by addressing its root causes.
At the same time, we must promote mutual respect and harmonious and peaceful coexistence while opposing persecution, provocation, prejudice, hate speech, and religious or racial hatred.
“Malaysia also welcomes the UN Secretary General’s Action Plan to Prevent Violent Extremism (PVE) which focuses on the prevention element, an approach that is already being practiced by Malaysia,” Muhyiddin said.
He also noted in his speech that, as recommended by the UN, Malaysia was currently developing its national action plan for PVE. – Bernama
