KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): A total of RM7 thousand was lost due to cyber and multimedia crimes from January to November, says Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal (Photo).

It added on Friday (Nov. 27) that 78 police reports had been filed during this period, and said that the scammers were now posing as friends and family of potential victims to trick them into giving money.

ACP Nik Ezanee said these scammers would come forward and then claim that the phone number in use was new.

“The scammers then gave bank account numbers that do not belong to the victims’ friends or family for the purpose of obtaining the ‘loan,'” he said in a statement Friday night.

He said victims would only realize they had been misled when they contacted their friends or family on the original phone numbers.

ACP Nik Ezanee added that 20 crime investigation documents using this modus operandi have been opened, and said they involve losses of RM250,000. – Bernama
