PETALING JAYA: Jalan Othman’s iconic wet market in Petaling Jaya and the surrounding commercial areas has closed due to an increase in Covid-19 cases.
Authorities, including armed forces personnel, were seen setting up barbed wire fences to block various roads leading to the market, as well as nearby shops, including the bus station.
About 100 acres of the PJ Old Town area are understood to have been under the motion control order.
The wet market popularly known as the “Old Town Market” closed on April 27 after a 51-year-old merchant from the seafood section tested positive for Covid-19.
Those who had been in the market between April 5 and 18 and bought shellfish were told to go examine them.
Since the movement control order (MCO) was relaxed last week, several areas have been subject to a “specific” MCO, including Taman Wilayah and Taman Desa Bakti in Selayang, as well as parts of Jalan Ampang and Chow Kit in Kuala Lumpur.
Authorities have said any closure would be limited to affected areas to contain the pandemic.
