PJ Old Town areas under enhanced MCO

CORONAVIRUS | The government has placed several areas within Petaling Jaya Old Town under two-weeks enhanced movement control order (MCO).

Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said this was following detection of 26 positive Covid-19 cases from the Jalan Othman wet market area there, “with the potential to spread”.

The order, entailing a full lockdown on businesses and movement in and out of affected areas, takes effect today and will end on May 23.

Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that security forces had begun cordoning off specific areas near the market with razor wires in the early hours of the morning, sparking speculation of a lockdown.

In a statement later confirming the lockdown and listing the affected areas, Ismail Sabri, who is also defense minister, said the order would cover an estimated 2,900 residents and business premises.

He said a medical base will be set up at the enhance MCO area.

“To ensure the order is followed, police, armed forces, civil defense forces, Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) will be monitoring the area,” the minister said.
