PETALING JAYA: A man who allegedly took advantage of the generosity of an imam (mosque worship leader) here has been arrested for fraud.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the case occurred at 5.54pm on February 1.
“The 38-year-old victim was approached at the Section 5 mosque in Kota Damansara by a man who claimed to have embraced Islam.
“The man begged the imam to help him pay off his credit card debt, claiming that the bank had blocked his card,” he said in a statement on Monday (September 21).
He said the victim gave RM450 to the suspect, who later claimed that he needed to go to Terengganu to pay off the debt with the bank there.
The victim said that the suspect asked him for more money to reactivate his credit card when he claimed that he had arrived in Terengganu.
“The victim transferred another RM650 to the suspect,” he said, adding that the victim soon realized that the suspect had blocked calls from his phone.
ACP Nik Ezanee said the victim later read about a scammer who was deceiving the imams and the ustaz (religious teacher) in Selangor.
“On Sunday (September 20), the victim ran into the suspect in a surau in Mutiara Damansara.
“The victim, along with a friend, detained the suspect and took him to the Mutiara Damansara police station,” he said, adding that staff from the commercial crime investigation department arrested the suspect.
ACP Nik Ezanee said the 35-year-old suspect had a record of two previous crimes and was in pretrial detention for four days.
