BRUSSELS: Pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and BioNTech, as well as its competitor Moderna, submitted applications for approval of their Covid-19 vaccines, the Xinhua news agency reported according to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on Tuesday.

Companies are seeking “conditional marketing authorization” for their vaccines. Authorization will be granted after the agency deems the submitted data to be robust enough to ensure quality, safety, and efficacy.

The EMA said in separate statements that the request submitted by the US company Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech will be evaluated in a special committee meeting to be held before December 29, while that of Moderna Biotech Spain, a subsidiary of the US biotech company Moderna, will be discussed on January 12 of next year at the latest.

If the EMA makes a positive recommendation, the European Commission, on behalf of the European Union (EU), will accelerate its decision-making process in order to grant a conditional marketing authorization valid throughout the EU and the EEA (Economic Area European) Member States in a few days, according to a Commission spokesperson.

As the world struggles to contain the pandemic, countries such as France, Germany, China, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States are racing to find a vaccine.

According to the World Health Organization website, as of November 26, 213 Covid-19 candidate vaccines were in development worldwide, and 49 of them were in clinical trials. – Called
