KUALA LUMPUR: subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), PC Carigali México Operations S.A. de C.V. (PCCMO) has made two deepwater oil discoveries in the Salina Basin off the coast of Mexico.
Petronas said Tuesday that the discovery was from the Polok-1 and Chinwol-1 exploration wells in Block 29.
The Polok-1 well was safely drilled to a depth of 2,620 meters and found 200 meters of net oil pay in the deep marine clastic deposits of the Lower Miocene.
The Chinwol-1 well, located 12 kilometers from Polok-1, was drilled to a depth of 1,850 meters and found a net oil payment of 150 meters in the lower Pliocene formation.
“Drilling of the Polok-1 exploration well started from February 29, 2020, followed consecutively by drilling of the Chinwol-1 well,” he said.
Upstream Petronas VP of exploration Emeliana Rice-Oxley said the two discoveries demonstrated her continued focus on pursuing opportunities to increase her resource and reserve portfolio in Mexico’s prolific watersheds.
“Together with our partners, we hope to further evaluate the data to determine the commercial potential of these discoveries,” said Rice-Oxley.
“These two discoveries along with the discovery of oil at the Monumento exploration well on the Gulf of Mexico coast last month mark three successful discoveries in a row, an important milestone for PETRONAS and its companies in the Americas,” he added.
The Polok-1 and Chinwol-1 wells are located in water depths of 584 meters and 464 meters, respectively, about 75 km northwest of the Tabasco coast.
Block 29 is operated by Repsol Exploración México S.A. de C.V. with a 30% working interest, while PCCMO owns 28.33%, Wintershall Dea owns 25% and PTTEP México E&P Limited, S. de R.L. de C.V. owns the remaining 16.67%.
Petronas, through its subsidiary, PCCMO, has interests in 10 exploration blocks in the three main basins of Mexico, with a total area of approximately 22,000 square km, of which PCCMO is the operator in five of the blocks.
