KUCHING: The Minister of Health, Dr. Adham Baba, announced today that permanent positions in Sarawak will be offered to 150 Contract Medical Officers (MO) of the UD41 grade.

It said in a statement that the location of these MOs who had completed their housework would only be in offices and health care facilities in Sarawak.

“This is to address the urgent need for doctors in the state,” he said.

“Of the total 150 MO, 66 or 44% are from Sarawak, while the remaining 84 officers are from the peninsula, who are also committed to serving the people in Sarawak.”

“Medical officers from the 2017 cohort will have to report to work at the Sarawak Health Department next Monday.”

The appointments were approved by the Public Utilities Commission on September 21 and would be retroactive to when they reported to work as contract physicians.

It was previously reported that 11 MOs and dental officers in Sarawak did not renew their contracts in February, despite the fact that Sarawak DAP President Chong Chieng Jen assured that all MO contracts in Sarawak would be renewed.

The president of SUPP’s education office, Ding Kuong Hiing, said that many doctors and dentists on the peninsula were reluctant to work in Sarawak.

“It is an indisputable fact that the MOs of the peninsula, after completing their specialized training in Sarawak, will choose to return,” he said in a press report in February.
