GEORGE TOWN: Former Penang Prime Minister Lim Guan Eng told the High Court here today that a post uploaded and shared by Perak PAS Commissioner Razman Zakaria on his Facebook account indicates that Lim does not respect Islam. .
Lim, who testified in his lawsuit against Razman via a fake image link on the latter’s Facebook page, said the post uploaded by the defendant was defamatory, offensive, misleading and false.
“The defamatory statement that I supported a policy prohibiting Muslim hotel workers from wearing headscarves while working has affected my position and reputation as an individual and also as Prime Minister of Penang at the time,” he said in his witness statement. read before the Judicial Commissioner. Lim said he also did not make any statements during his tenure as Penang’s prime minister in support of any policy prohibiting Muslim hotel employees at reception desks from wearing veils.
The former finance minister said that the defendant, as an experienced politician who occupies a high position in his party, should be aware of the adverse consequences that could result from such a defamatory statement.
On January 22, 2018, Lim filed a lawsuit against Razman for uploading a false image to his social media account (Razman) and posting a defamatory, false and malicious statement against Lim on November 18, 2017.
Razman stated in his post that Lim appeared to be supporting the ban on wearing headscarves, which was a right of hotel operators, and that Penang fully supported it.
In his claim statement, Lim said that the words used in Razman’s post came from an inauthentic source and were intended to tarnish his name and reputation, and described the plaintiff as a leader who did not respect Islam or Malay culture.
Lim seeks general, exemplary, and aggravated damages, and other relief the court deems appropriate, in addition to requesting an order to prevent the defendant from issuing or posting the same post again on any platform.
