With Thomas Su-M Kula Segaran on one side and Nga Kor Ming-Ngeh Koo Ham on the other, Perak DAP faces a fierce battle.

IPOH: Perak DAP is heading for a major showdown in its triennial elections next week, with a faction led by two MPs trying to gain control of the state leadership from cousins Ngeh Koo Ham-Nga Kor Ming, who have led the state for more than a decade.

Kampar MP Thomas Su, who is mounting a strong challenge against the headlines, today announced 15 candidates on his side with Ipoh Barat MP Kula Segaran as his running mate. Others in his faction are Assemblymen Terence Naidu (Pasir Bedemar), Leow Thye Yih (Pokok Assam) and former Menglembu Assemblyman Keong Meng Sing.

The remainder are members, some hold branch-level positions.

Su, a former state organizing secretary from 1999 to 2010, said he announced the full list (of 15 candidates) in hopes of getting the most votes next week.

“We released our list today because the other party has not made an announcement yet,” he told FMT.

The other faction is led by incumbent state president Nga, deputy from Teluk Intan, and assemblyman from Aulong, who is backed by Ngeh, deputy from Beruas.

It is common knowledge that state leadership for the past 10 years has been controlled by Nga and Ngeh.

Su said the state meeting and elections were scheduled for March 14, but it was unclear how it would take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said that some 2,000 delegates from 300 branches were eligible to attend the meeting and elect the state committee for the next three years.

Both Su and Kula, who was treasurer and secretary of state from 1997 to 2008, have had a strained relationship with the cousins and were not elected to the state committee last time despite being elected representatives.

According to the party constitution, the 15 elected candidates will proceed to elect the incumbent, including the posts of president, vice president and two vice presidents.
