Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has praised both Xherdan Shaqiri and Neco Williams ahead of the Reds’ Carabao Cup clash with Arsenal on Thursday night.
Shaqiri made his first start of the calendar year in the fourth round of the tournament last week, while Williams was the subject of some criticism on social media after the match, which Liverpool won 7-2.
On Shaqiri, Lijnders said: “He had an excellent game against Lincoln in a different position than he is used to playing, so that makes him even more recognizable and great.
“Also, for him, to play [after a difficult spell with injuries] and play this way. If we expect anything from Shaq, it is that he tries to dictate the game and look for attacking solutions and participate in the construction and creation. “

Both Shaqiri and Williams will hope to start at Anfield with a much-changed XI that is expected to line up in Monday’s Premier League clash against the same opponents.
On Williams, Lijnders added: “First of all, and this is the most important thing to understand, Neco is a ‘doer’. A ‘doer’ makes mistakes, we don’t want a safe game. I want a player who doesn’t take risks.
“Our game is based on everyone taking the initiative and that is what we want.

“One of the most important lessons for every passing player is that you are a weakness if you get caught up in praise and criticism.
“He handled it very well and we had players talking to him, and our coach talking to him.”
“You can’t get caught up in the praise and the criticism; both won’t help you as a young player.”
The draw for the fifth round of the Carabao Cup will take place full time in the Liverpool match.
If Liverpool progresses, the next round is scheduled for the week beginning December 21.
