Restaurant owners will be required to record customer names and contact numbers to allow for follow-up contacts if the need arises.

GEORGE TOWN: Starting next Monday, restaurants in Penang will be able to have customers for dinner with established measures to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said strict social distancing should be done, while restaurants should record the details of both diner and take-away customers to allow contact tracing.

Restaurants in Penang have remained closed to diners despite relaxed restrictions under the conditional motion control order implemented by the federal government on May 4.

Speaking today, Chow added that a contact locating system developed by the state government was now available for use by restaurant and business owners.

He said the system, PGCare, would allow owners to delete customer details.

“The system will not only save time but will also prevent physical contact and ensure that personal information is not abused.”

He said the system would only record the names and contact numbers of customers who would not be available to the state government.

“Companies will also not be able to access their data,” he said at a press conference today.

He said the information would be given to the health ministry if the need arises. The data will be kept for 30 days after which it will be automatically deleted.

The PGCare system was jointly developed by Chief Minister Incorporated and Madison Technologies and endorsed by Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd.
