Penang has closed 33 restaurants and entertainment venues for violating health and physical distancing rules.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government today warned all businesses to immediately close down if they go against Covid-19 SOPs.

Local Government Committee Chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the city council will carry out daily law enforcement operations starting tomorrow.

To date, he said, city councils on the island and the mainland had closed 33 restaurants and entertainment venues for violating the rules of physical distancing and health.

He said that in view of the growing number of cases nationwide, the Penang and Seberang Perai municipalities will increase their foot patrols and manpower to monitor all outlets starting tomorrow.

“We thank those who are complying with the measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Please keep in mind that we will attack harshly those who continue to ignore our repeated warnings, ”he said in Komtar.

Jagdeep said the compliance rate on the island was 99.6%, based on checks at 335,116 outlets, and 99.3% on Seberang Perai after checks at 571,516 stores.
